Curriculum intent

Physical education is a fundamental part of the school curriculum. It acts as an enabler to develop key life skills both inside and outside of the subject. Students are taught a variety of different skills including how to be a problem solver, a critical thinker and a decisive action taker.

At Heath Lane we want our pupils to be exposed to a wide variety of practical sports where they can develop and increase their skill repertoire. We also strive to develop the pupils tactical and technical knowledge, their fitness, their communication and leadership skills.

We utilise a 3-stage approach towards our sequencing of lessons in order to help us to achieve our goals. They are:

  • Fit To Perform
  • Fit To Lead
  • Fit for Life

Our high-quality PE offer includes teaching many sport and physical activities, from a range of National Curriculum strands. Including: Invasion games, Net/Wall, Creative, Athletics, Outdoor & Adventurous and Striking & Fielding.

Promoting active, healthy lifestyles and for students to understand what this means to them and how they can apply this to their own lifestyle is at the forefront of what we do. Pupils must also have an awareness and knowledge of physical fitness which, in turn, will help to promote lifelong participation in sport and physical activity.

We want our students to leave us with transferable skills that they have learned through sport, that they can apply to various situations in their later lives.

Finally, we strive to expand our students’ horizons. We want them to be the very best version of themselves, and we will use sport and physical activity as our driver to help achieve this goal.
